Within the third article in the series about the “miracle” and the “mind,” we will bring kindness and unkindness in to the discussion about specialness. Inside a Course in Miracles (ACIM), kindness is assigned to humility and learning and unkindness is to use arrogance and specialness. The miracle-minded obviously choose humility, learning and kindness meaning they’ll eventually learn how to forgive all specialness which can be what maintains the separation from God. Belief in separation applies to if you are the One Son perceiving Himself as separate and various fragments. All unkindness is due to the anxiety inside the mind if we repress our fear and guilt rather than forgiving our specialness desires. We blame and project it onto others who are actually an element of us actually.
There are 2 books by Kenneth Wapnick on, “The Healing Power Kindness.” Volume 1 is on, “Releasing Judgment” and Volume 2 on, “Forgiving Our Limitations.” I think, these should be required reading and continuing study if you’re a life threatening Course student. These passage says all of it:
Whenever you set aside the brilliant metaphysics of your Course in Miracles along with its sophisticated psychological insights, this course might be pared right down to one simple rule: Be kind. If you’re not kind, then not only are you currently not practicing the Course, no one is able you may also begin to realize it. Regardless of how brilliant your knowledge of the company’s metaphysics may be, if you’re not being kind toward another individual, you’re not doing what this program is asking (The Healing Power Kindness, Vol.1: Releasing Judgment by Kenneth Wapnick, p. 10, underline mine).
Despite this admonition, we refer to being unkind:
This wherewithal to truly practice A training course in Miracles’ kind principles of forgiveness they study, or even teach, has perhaps been the most serious failing among its students. This book’s sequel, “Few Decide to Listen,” discusses how students often conceal their thought system of specialness beneath the guise of spiritual counseling or friendship. The absence of simple kindness is, unfortunately, unmistakable to all or any except the program student making the spiritual pronouncements (The Message Of an Course in Miracles: Each is Called, p. 306).
The non-dualistic specification of kindness can’t be understood here within the connection with dualism so long as specialness is continuously chosen because the ego emanates from an unkind thought against God and Heaven. Our unwillingness to recognize this concerning the ego, as well as what all that thought system is capable of doing, is something that hinders our progress using the Course. We have to be prepared to consider the ego with all the Holy Spirit – the Teacher – and take that darkness to Him for forgiveness. Nothing can be hidden which is right out the Course.
Kindness To Others Is Kindness To Self
As part of his books on kindness, Mr. Wapnick also covers the source of an person’s unkind behavior is similar fear (and repressed guilt) that is certainly working in our own mind and that is what unites us. We’ve got precisely the same right-mind along with the same capability to choose from them. Determining to be kind won’t make us different or better; rather it indicates we are prepared to practice the “kind principles” in the Course to ensure that we can easily learn to understand everything it really is teaching. It’s only a question of priority.
He procedes point out that in learning how you can be kind towards others, we’re practicing being kind toward ourselves because, “you as well as your brother are certainly one. They may be part of you. You aren’t different.” This holds straight to the guts in the ego’s thought system wherein the thought of difference is the place the ego began – God and His Son were separate and different – and undoes it. The slightest hint of specialness is the ego. What he’s saying becomes clear in the event you actually study and use the kind forgiveness of the Course!
A serious student of the Course really wants to know what this means. These students would rather certainly be a happy learner with the only true teacher – the Holy Spirit – rather than spiritually special teacher of the ego of all sorts. They are happy to study from Him the best way to be free of the burdens connected with denying reality:
Forgiveness’ kindness is obscure in the beginning, because salvation is just not understood, nor truly sought for (S-2.I.1). And here you are going to lay down the load of denying truth. This is the burden that is terrible, instead of the reality (T-21-VI.7).
Self versus “self” -or- Identity versus “identity”
Inside the Course, you will find there’s difference between the “Self” that is our true Identity as Christ and the “self” identity with the ego. This is a key factor to comprehend since the first accepts the part God gave us through being God-created; however the latter is self-created and completely determined by the ego as well as purpose of vengeance tweaking separation. Everyone already believes those are the ego. We couldn’t survive here otherwise. To think about the possibly of these being correct and in need of correction restores aspire to the mind since it points to the way in which out.
When a spiritually special Course teacher (a sort of unhealed healer) teaches specialness of the ego, these are being unkind towards others and so themselves but they are highly unlikely to look at it this way. They are also improbable to believe it is kind for an individual to own boundaries together his or her fear and guilt (and anxiety) are really great. However, honestly going through the world, we view that it must be filled up with the fragmented Sonship who is anxiety-ridden from identifying with the ego self. Unkindness is rampant on the globe as well as in the Course community. As Wapnick states though, we will never study the Course until we choose to get kind.
Our behaviors include the type of which mind we have chosen (God or perhaps the ego). The ego is a vengeful and tyrannical thought system of unkindnesses whereas freedom from it is tied directly to kindness:
Without anxiety your head is wholly kind (T-6.III.3).
Freedom can’t be learned by tyranny of any type (T-8.IV.7).
It is also unkind to alter the Course and spiritual specialness does that through competition with God and therefore everyone. One small change effectually changes the whole thing from the Course, a complete thought system. If you believe you realize that, you don’t. Once you know you do, you may automatically be kind for you comprehend the inherent value kindness plays to learn and knowing the Course. As Wapnick states, “It’s a matter of priority.”
When Kindness Calls
In summary, let’s turn back the now to Mr. Wapnick and the book, “The Message Of your Course In Miracles: Few Opt to Listen,” and also to Chapters 4 and 6 on spiritual specialness. I’ll highlight some important passages beginning with an incredibly telling quote. First, however, allow me to also add this two-book set (including, “Few Choose To Listen”) should also be required ongoing study for serious Course students:
“Love is frightening since it is all-encompassing and there there isn’t any room for specialness or individual uniqueness.”
He goes on to indicate that if we have been inclined to call attention to our opinion is a few deficiency, or lack, we have been planning to make such limitation real and into something divides the Sonship. The rock of salvation is that no one can lose so another gains, i.e., there is nothing to consider from another, even if it’s just their success. However, we do not appreciate this until following the essential time invested in learning the words are correct along with their true meaning. What our bodies seem doing lets us know which internal teacher we’ve got chosen – the ego or Holy Spirit. The ego is limitations, judgment, specialness and separation – the the complete opposite of the Sonship as you.
When we’re not kind, we’re not Course students or teachers of God (the program as our path). When kindness calls, it should be chosen as kindness results in miracle-mindedness. Unkindness is in the ego.
