The Magical Handshake ~ Perhaps you have Tried It? By Faith Faith BBE, CTM, NE

Everybody knows the significance of an excellent first impression. In only seconds of a meeting, people attain an array of information about us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, bodily proportions, posture, demeanor and the sound of our voice. It’s an essential time because there is no second chance to create a good first impression.

Then it happens … the handshake.

One time i took a communications class with a nearby church. The teacher had 30+ attendees fall into line single file. The instructions were to look him within the eye and shake his hand. I was confident I knew how to properly shake hands.

After the last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me that which you considered my handshake. Maybe it was a great handshake or a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It was a company grip like mine. His handshake confirmed in my experience I knew how to shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”

He then said something which completely took me aback.

He was quoted saying the reason why everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. If the handshake was firm, his was firm. Whether it was obviously a light touch, his was obviously a light touch. Should they used their other hand to understand his, his contrary grasped theirs. He stated this handshake technique creates an instantaneous good impression and likeability.

Likeability?

Yes. It’s just like the way you feel once we meet an unfamiliar person and discover we share exactly the same name. Or when in conversation using a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically that way person. This is the reason I refer to it as the Magical Handshake.

From this level on, It is best to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, allow them to shake yours. Mirror the things they’re doing. If you’re offered a company grip, mirror a strong grip. If you’re offered a gentle grip, mirror a gentle grip. Be sure you mirror the shake too. It’s all about the grip and shake.

The only exception happens when someone gives you a handshake making use of their palm facing down. While you shake hands, they’ve got the upper-hand and are responsible. They dominate. This is what’s called a hostile handshake.

When offered a hostile handshake, respond giving them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start with your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with both of yours. Then, straighten their handshake vertically using a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates in their mind, “we are equal.”

Shaking Hands need to produce a good first impression, supply the Magical Handshake a go. Take action once you meet and greet people. It’s an easy, surefire approach to improve your likeability factor.
