Whitewater Kayaking and Rafting in Nepal

Once you think about Nepal, whitewater Rafting and Kayaking usually are not the initial things that spring into mind, well at least it had not been to me. More likely images of Kathmandu, rice paddies, Everest as well as the mysterious Himalaya pop in your head. In order to imagine my surprise after i have got to Nepal and wound up rafting and kayaking over 10 x!

When you turn up in Thamel or Pokhara (the primary touristy area’s in Nepal) you will find travel agents all around us, i immediately decided rafting was something I needed to do inside my time in Nepal. The very first decision to make is which river to go on. Nepal offers lots of the worlds best rivers, which range from a gently flowing river to many of the fiercest whitewater on the globe. So determined by your experience and thirst for adrenaline, there’s most definitely something for any person! The very best times to go are between March-June or September-October; although trips will run all year round the water will likely be at its highest, fastest, and quite a few exhilarating during these months.

Choosing a company to match can be somewhat tricky though! There are many travel specialists lining the streets, however, choosing one involving the other is almost impossible…They all offer virtually the same prices, nearly exactly the same trips and promise a good time of your life! However there are a lot of companies available, it’s a shame to express which are soon after your hard earned money. You should find a registered company that have safety measures in place. I ended up going with GRG’s Adventure Kayaking. Having met Maila, the business owner, a couple of times around Thamel I trusted which he would deliver what he promised, after doing a bit of research I ran across that he is the best Kayaker in Nepal, having just won the Himalayan Championship to the second time, I felt I had created made the best decision and could be in safe hands.

The journey on the river was amazing in itself. Taken from the valley you’re greeted by the more traditional lifestyle. Women working hard within the rice paddies inside their saris, looking more glamorous than I could ever achieve! Children carrying their books on their heads walking along the highway to college; Gorgeous mountains in private; Random Buffalo dotted throughout the scene to mention just some things we were treated to on our journey to the river. After 2 hours of staring hypnotised out the window we reached a small village ready for your rafting needs. There were a smaller shed (a bit like usually the one you can think of Mary and Joseph stumbling upon! ) to finding changed in, toilets, tea, biscuits, water, all you have to before starting every day on the river!

When going to the start point, I realised I had created made the most suitable decision in picking GRG’s. There were about 20 rafts prearranged and waiting to select various companies and ours was on your own with any safety kayakers. You can view where GRG’s got their logo ‘SAFETY FIRST’ from!

Which was it, Maila and also the team got us all suited and booted in your life jackets, helmets, (depending on the weather, splash jackets were available) and after an incredibly informative safety talk we were off! Immediately greeted by kayaking in Nepal , aptly named ‘Good Morning’ as that first splash with your face and down your T-Shirt definitely awakens you!
